Classic Mint Julep

I love the Kentucky Derby. Something about horse racing has always been so captivating to me, from the amazing power and speed of the horses to the exciting elegance and pageantry around the events. Thats why, every year on the first Saturday of May, my family and I enjoy a Classic Mint Julep and watch the event. The Mint Julep is a Kentucky Derby staple, in no small part because of its star ingredient: bourbon. For this drink, fresh mint is muddled with simple syrup. This helps bring out the fresh, herbal flavor of the mint and infuse the simple syrup. Then, bourbon is swirled into the mix and topped with crushed ice. The perfect woodsy, herbal cocktail for a day at the races or a simple summer evening on the porch.

Because this drink is so bourbon forward, I suggest using the best bourbon you have. You really want to appreciate all the subtle flavor notes that bourbon brings to the table, like smoke, cinnamon, and orange peel.

I used a big ice cube for the photo so that it was easy to see the bourbon and mint, but crushed ice is traditional, and for good reason. The crushed ice not only keeps the beverage very cold, but it also melts somewhat, diluting the bourbon just enough.
